This site is significant because...
The Dairy Bar Sign has served as a treasured landmark to the local community, Calgarians and visitors for over five decades. (Landmark value, Community significance)
The Dairy Bar Sign is a reminder of the former confectioneries and dairy bars which, from the early 1940's, served as a leisure destination for the community, Sunshine Auto Camp patrons and Stampede visitors. (Symbolic value, Community significance)
The neon sign was fabricated ca 1957, at the peak of neon sign production in Calgary. However, few illuminated signs from this period remain in the city, and it is the only known early neon sign in Ramsay. (Design value, City-wide significance)
Character-defining elements: Key elements that define the heritage character of the Dairy Bar Sign include its: - location and relative placement on the north-facing narrow end of the wedge-shaped building; one storey above ground; angled mounting orientation of the sign in all planes; - projecting double-face sign with internal electronics and base mounting brackets; painted sheet metal sculptured housing with cone-shaped base and ice cream shaped top; paint colours which reflect the colour of the cone and ice cream; original fabrication details such as housing ventilation slots on the narrow edge; - pattern of bent glas
