Construction commenced on the Calgary Woodworkers' building in May of 1911, shortly after the property was acquired by Maxwell Fraser, an active developer and businessman, and President of the Seablom-Fraser Contracting Company and founder of the Calgary Hardware Stores Limited. Fraser, who had by this time started construction on several Atlantic Avenue blocks, was supported in the Calgary Woodworkers' venture by local and Eastern investors.
The business, established as a planing mill, was erected during the intense economic expansion and diversification of the boom years. Like many similar enterprises, Calgary Woodworkers' Limited served the rapidly growing building trades industry.
