HERITAGE CHARACTER STATEMENT
The building is designed in the Modern style and features; strongly expressed structural grid with curtain wall glazing system, and, an executive penthouse level. The interior lobby configuration and marble finishes remain intact. It is located on a prominent corner and is compatible with the dominant character of the immediate area.
SUMMARY HISTORY
In the wake of the Leduc oil discovery in 1947, Calgary emerged as the administrative centre of Alberta's oil industry. The Barron Building, completed in 1951, was the first office tower in what emerged as a new oil patch district in the west end of Calgary's downtown in the 1950's and 1960's. The Britannia building was constructed in 1958 on what was originally a residential block first built up between 1908 and 1913. The building permit was issued on February 12, 1958.
